We are extremely excited to have Pantheon onboard as our new Drupal hosting partner. If you are using one of the example PR workflow projects (Drupal 8, Drupal 9, WordPress) as a starting point for your site, these entries should already be present in your composer.json. Modern, fast workflows for faster WCMS upgrade releases.Dynamic scaling of infrastructure resources, meaning your site will not go down as a result of large spikes in site traffic volume.A global content delivery network (CDN) allowing for faster website performance, both domestically and around the world.Managed Drupal core updates and security patches, freeing up WCMS development team time and resources.Pantheon provides a compelling set of services for WCMS 3, including (but not limited to): Pantheon's platform and services will ultimately allow the WCMS software development team to focus on continuous improvement of the core WCMS system. A bus has an assigned route and schedule, so you'll eventually get to where you want to go, but you will have to ride with other passengers along the way. You tell the driver exactly where you want to go, and then sit back and enjoy the ride by yourself. You can pick any car you want and drive it anywhere you want, but at the end of the day the car is never yours. You can drive yourself anywhere you want, but are responsible for all repairs and maintenance, and upgrading means buying a new car. On premise hosting is like owning your own car. To explain the differences between these models, we can make a quick transportation analogy. We specialize in five business verticals: Healthcare, NPO/NGO, Government, Publishing & Associations. PaaS is one of the three service models of computing, along with Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and Software-as-a-service (SaaS). Echidna is a Drupal development shop based in SW Ontario. PaaS is a model of computing where a development team essentially rents infrastructure from a vendor, who also actively manages and continuously develops that infrastructure. Why Pantheon?Īnswering the question "Why Pantheon?" perhaps needs to start with a quick explanation of what the concept of Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) is first. Earlier in 2020, the University finalized an agreement with Pantheon to provide a managed Drupal hosting platform for all new WCMS 3 websites. Pantheon is one of the largest cloud-based Drupal PaaS hosting providers and delivers best-in-class performance and experience for developers, content maintainers, and site visitors. However, post-launch you would only want to copy the live database and files down to development and testing environments, as the live production environment is the canonical source of site content. It is critical for the WCMS to continue to be hosted on infrastructure that delivers fast performance with near-100% availability. Typically you'll install Drupal and configure the modules on the development environment before launching the site, then clone that database up to live to retain all the content changes. The workflow tools let you push code from dev->test->live, and also clone your database and files between environments. Once you're satisfied with the results, you can push your site code to the test environment for user testing and then to the live environment to serve the site from your domain, once you've launched with a paid site. You can install Drupal plus modules and themes on your development site. Pantheon hosts three distinct environments for each site: development, testing, and the live production site. To install Drupal on an existing Pantheon site you don't need to install or copy anything to your local computer you can just work on the Pantheon development environment in the cloud using the dashboard workflow.
